Eight Tubes

When you think about it, a bicycle frame is a pretty simple device. After all, it is basically eight tubes, with various brackets and lugs strewn about so that you can attach things like wheels, chainrings, and brakes. Bike frames have pretty much been the same shape (and made from the same materials) for about 100 years. All of the big design wrinkles have been ironed out. Greasy-handed bike guys have been putting them together for years, using rather rudimentary tools.

So I wanted to see if I could put one together. I mean, how hard could it be?

The answer to that question is “you’d be surprised.”

Below are pics of my project. After spending around 3 months worth of weekends in the garage with a torch in one hand and a cup of coffee in the other, I’ve managed to achieve state-of-the-art from around 1970. Which is cool, and a bit humbling. I actually rode it this weekend, and nothing broke or fell off. It needs to come apart for final assembly and finishing.
